Plitvice Lakes National Park spans 296.85 square kilometres of karst terrain in Croatia's Lika region, a landscape shaped by 12,000 years of travertine deposition.
Sixteen terraced lakes descend 133 vertical metres through dense beech and fir forest, each basin separated by natural dams that grow roughly one centimetre per year. The park entered UNESCO's World Heritage register in 1979, recognised for its ongoing geological processes and endemic aquatic ecosystems. Annual visitation now exceeds 1.7 million, concentrated heavily between May and September when all wooden boardwalk circuits remain open.
The corridor between Split and Plitvice runs 240 kilometres inland, crossing from coastal Dalmatia into the continental highlands. Road travel typically requires three to three-and-a-half hours each direction depending on the Gospić routing. Organised excursions depart Split before sunrise to secure early park entry, when morning light penetrates the lower canyon and crowds remain thin along the Donja Jezera circuit. Most itineraries include the electric boat crossing Kozjak Lake, the park's largest basin at 81 hectares, and the panoramic train that climbs to the upper entrance plateau.
The park's boardwalk network totals 18 kilometres, split across eight marked routes ranging from two to eight hours. Programme H, the shortest loop, covers the Lower Lakes cascade including Veliki Slap, Croatia's tallest waterfall at 78 metres. Programme K, the longest circuit, traverses all sixteen lakes and climbs to the Prošćansko viewpoint at 639 metres elevation. Travertine barriers form naturally when calcium carbonate precipitates from supersaturated spring water, a process visible in real time along the Korana River outlets. Moss, algae, and bacteria colonies mediate the chemical reaction, binding sediment into porous stone.
Park infrastructure includes four entrance stations, electric boat and train services, and a network of rest pavilions positioned at major junctions. Conservation fees fund ongoing footpath maintenance, invasive species control, and hydrological monitoring. The park operates year-round, though winter snowfall often closes upper-elevation trails and reduces electric transport schedules between December and February.
